Coping With Bereavement; Is There Anything Which Can Help?

By Ralph Cotton on Jun. 27, 2009.

By: Roseanna Leaton

The movie “Gran Torino” begins, and ends, with a funeral. There is mention of the bitter and sweet aspects of death, and questions as to whether death is an end or a beginning. Some of us believe in reincarnation or at least an after-life, whilst others do not.

No matter what your beliefs are about the after-life, it is hard for those left in this world to feel happy when trying to cope with the loss of someone who you dearly love. I can still see my mother’s expression during her mother’s, my grand-mothers, funeral. I can clearly remember how strong she was, how she talked about the funeral ceremony being one of celebration as opposed to loss; celebration at a wonderful and long life, and a beautiful person. These words belied the tears held back in my mother’s eyes. She was determined not to cry that day and she didn’t, not then; she cried beforehand and afterwards but not then. It was her tribute to her mother.

I only discovered in recent years that my mother has taken sleeping pills ever since my father died. Sleepless nights are all too familiar to those who are doing their best to cope with loss. Memories, worries and fears circle around one’s mind and your emotions are turned inside-out and upside down. You turn into yourself and don’t feel that anyone can help. All you can do is take one day at a time and focus on the practicalities of day to day life. Days seem to pass in a complete blur, until eventually you realize that you have got through it; it is as if you have moved through a dark and damp tunnel and have finally reached daylight once again.

Cheap Summer Fun for Families with Kids

By Ralph Cotton on Jun. 2, 2009.

School will be out any day. The kids will be looking for fun things to do. Take a few minutes to read these suggestions. Then get out a box, gather the cheap and easily obtained supplies necessary for some of these activities, and voila! You have a summer activity box, full of cheap, fun activities to rely on as needed. And of course some of these activities don’t require any special supplies.

Use these suggestions to get your summer off to a fun start:

Backyard Camper

Let the kids set up a tent in the backyard and each invite a friend to come to a campout. Throw some burgers and hotdogs on the grill for dinner, then let them roast marshmallows or make s’mores for dessert. In the evening, the kids can chase fireflies for fun. When dusk arrives, give them each a flashlight and send them out to their tent. Let them have even more fun telling spooky stories or girly secrets until it’s time for sleep.

Backyard Scientist

Summer is a wonderful time for kids to experiment. Use these links for surefire summer science fun. Click on the highlighted word to find directions to make an antacid-fueled rocket, face paint, bubbles, sculpture sand, or homemade play dough. Another fun project is making an erupting volcano. To do this, provide the kids with clay to construct a volcano. The top of the volcano needs to either fit a small paper cup (2 oz.) inside or be designed so that it can hold liquid inside near the top of the volcano. The volcano can be painted or natural. When it is ready, fill the cup half full of baking soda, add some food coloring (this is for the lava), and then fill the cup with plain white vinegar. The volcano will then “erupt.” These fun science activities are all cheap; they use simple ingredients, many of which you are likely to have on hand.

Backyard Neptune

mach zehnder modulatorNever underestimate the power of water when looking for summer fun. No time to take the kids to the pool? Set them free with the hose, a sprinkler, super soakers or other water toys. When they’re sick of spraying water on themselves, let them spray it in the sandbox so they can make sand sculptures. Or spray it on the car and wash it with sponges. This is good cheap summer fun that can stand in for a trip to the pool.

Backyard Explorer

A cheap magnifying glass, a cheap pair of binoculars, a cheap butterfly net and a bag to collect specimens can turn your child into a backyard explorer. What interesting leaves, rocks, feathers, seeds, and other items can they find? If you have a lot of trees or flowers, you can provide them with a reference book from the library and see if they can “catalog” your herbiage and flora. If you have a lot of birds coming to your yard, give them a bird book and see if they can identify the different birds coming into the yard. You can even let them create a simple bird feeder to attract birds. One simple way to make a bird feeder is to clean a milk container otherwise destined for the recycling bin (keep the cap!) and cut a hole in the side for birds to perch. Fill the portion below the opening with birdseed. Another quick birdfeeder can be made by smearing a pine cone with birdseed and hanging it from a tree.

Backyard Gardener

There are many great ideas to inspire children with gardening. They could plant their own butterfly garden with flowers that attract butterflies, or they could make a pizza garden (click on the highlighted words for instructions). Other ideas include rainbow gardens, rock gardens, and sculpture gardens. For garden sculpture, they can decorate rocks, pour quick dry cement in molds (with adult help), or use household odds and ends that can withstand the elements.

Backyard Artist

Anyone who has let their kids do artwork indoors knows that the outdoors is the perfect place for art. Set up an outdoor easel and let your child use tempera, finger paint or water color. They can also experiment with plants, using them to dye colors on paper or to press into place as part of their design. As summer is waning, let them collect various plant seeds (magnolia are a gorgeous bright red) and string them together to make jewelry.

Article Marketing Made Simple

By Ralph Cotton on May. 13, 2009.

In today’s web world, one thing is clear. Content is still king. Writing the right kind of content and disturbing that content, also known as article marketing, can help you establish yourself as an expert and improve your online marketing results.

Getting started with article marketing is easy to do and can pay huge dividends. Many individuals use article marketing to improve search engine rankings, to inform, or to pitch products and services they sell. Regardless of your purpose, consider using article marketing as a great way to build a loyal following.

The proliferation of information online has brought with it varying degrees of content. Some content is valid, other content is purely fictional. When you write, be sure to provide references, examples, or quote data from other sources. This helps to build credibility and informs your audience that your content can be trusted. For your article marketing to be effective, follow these guidelines:

Research your niche. Before you begin any writing whatsoever, start by finding a niche that is popular and that you feel you can write about. It should be something you enjoy. If you are not interested in a particular area, it will be difficult to enjoy the process of writing articles.

Create a plan. Are you going to write one article per week or one each day? Think about how much time and energy you want to put into your article writing and for what purpose. If you simply want to write and publish your work, you may only want to do a little bit each day. Once you have a complete work, then you would submit to websites or blogs. On the other hand, if you are looking for improved rankings or sales from your article marketing, your publishing schedule may need to be more aggressive.

Write your article. Write and article on your subject that includes the specific keywords you seek to optimize for. Your article should be between four to seven hundred words. It all depends on the intent and purpose of the article. After you write your article make sure you proof it for spelling and grammatical errors.

Submit your article to article directories. This is a great way to get your information published quickly and easily. Register with an article directory like Ezinearticles or GoArticles. By doing so, you will have a place to submit your articles and build an author profile. Webmasters use these article directories to find content for their website. Additionally, article directories give you added exposure in a given topic area.

Article marketing has many benefits. The most important aspect of article marketing, in my opinion is to clearly understand what you want to use it for, building a plan, and consistently creating and distributing content. This is essential for long term success.
